Liberal Democrats Missing In Action
Liberal Democrats Missing In Action
II wonder why Nick Clegg was not in Brussels with his pal Dave, it would have solved all the problems that now face the Government.
The Liberal Democrats actually give Dave an excuse for refusing the advances of those foreign devils, they could play the mask of Janus for all it is worth, Dave can say, “I do not agree with these terms, they are unfair to all my rich friends,” and then Nick can take centre stage, “My dear friends I share your beliefs and social concerns, we need to control these financial vultures.”
Then everyone would have been happy. Dave Cameron would have kept his backbenchers happy, Nick Clegg could keep everyone else happy, what a wonderful double act, better than Morecambe and Wise, better than Laurel and Hardy, but it didn’t happen like that.
Dave went off on his own, Jack The Giant Killer, he had drawn a line in the sand, these damn foreigners are not going to tell us what to do, wave the Union Flag, show them who is boss.
That’s not how politics work. Politics is the art of achieving the achievable not destroying that which you cannot or will not agree too. Many of the leaders in Brussels had misgivings about the Franco-German plans but they did not have to do anything because Dave had shot his mouth off. They all knew what he was going to say because he had said it so many times before. If only he had gone there in silence, not played to his domestic audience, he might have forced some other politician to come out of the woodwork and opposed this deal, some might have to do that when forced by domestic considerations, but not Dave, he has got a big mouth.
Finally, home to his adoring supporters, acclamation from all around, home the conquering hero, he put them in their places. But where is the great supporter of this Government? where is the twin pillar that holds this coalition in place? Sulking in his chambers. How can one man have so many principles and throw them all into the dustbin just to hang on to power, grasping, tatty, nasty politician? Nick is a man of many views and today he expressed opposition to his partner, clearly putting forward an opinion that was diametrically opposed to Dave, will he resign! Well, that is a question! Did he resign over tuition fees? No.! he will cling on. Will you be able to prise his fingers away from the levers of authority? not a chance. No matter what Dave does or which policies he follows Nick will be right behind him, his good friend, forward to the bitter end…
