Paul Collins interviews K.D. Rose.

Tell us about your background. Who you are, where you are from?
I am an author and poet and currently have “Heavy Bags of Soul”, “Inside Sorrow” and “I AM” on sale at Amazon.com. Look for The Erasing Series, Book 1-“Erasing: Shadows” on sale from December, 2013! Erasing: Shadows is the first of a Seven Book Series for New Adults in the Paranormal Genre.

I am also very excited that I am now an author with Lycaon Press, a subsidiary of Breathless Press. Erasing: Shadows will be my first book for them. My book, Inside Sorrow won the Readers Favorite 2013 international Silver Medal for Poetry- General. Just like my books, my writing is edgy, hits you in the gut and gives you the education you never knew you needed. I try to write with irony, truth, and a little bit of a spiked pen at times.

K.D.-RoseI have a very eclectic mind and love language, physics, philosophy, photography, design, art, writing of all kinds, symbolism, semiotics, spirituality, and Dr. Who. I also find a lot of inspiration from music. I typically value the question more than the answer and love creativity and innovation. I am a sucker for cutting edge thought and sometimes really going “out there”.

I’m an avid supporter of music, the arts, cutting edge science, technology, and creativity in all forms that encourage us to expand and explore past the artificial limits we often set for ourselves in order to see the everyday connections that exist among all things.

What themes does your book explore and what do you hope the readers will take away from the experience? Is there a particular feeling or experience that you hope to evoke for the reader?
This is a powerful book for females that relies on graphics with words to tell important stories succinctly and give vital support and empowerment to females from ages 10 to 100. I wanted to use the combination of pictures with words, to create a more profound experience, if you really look at the pictures and how they go along with the words.

REVIEW: “This book is for girls. This book is for women. This is a book to empower females from teenagers through adults. Take this book and use it. The contents were made to keep us going through the tough times. Females, we undervalue ourselves. Easily. And we too easily believe how little we are worth. This is not a book that has anything against men. But they can write their own book. And don’t forget, we need to UN-bifurcate and take care of ourselves just as humans too. But this is a book for females. I wanted especially to use pictures in a prominent way to tell some of our stories. Find ways to tell your own. Find the things that matter in life. Don’t let anyone make you loosen your grip. Ever. You are all you have. Take good care of yourself.”

What prompted you to be an author and did you have a specific inspiration in mind? Were you influenced by a certain person, artist, or genre?
Well, if you don’t count the Nancy Drew book I tried to write at age 5…. I have just always written. It is just that I did not go for actually publishing until the last 5 years. I would say I’ve been writing short stories and poetry since about 13. I’ve been keeping a dream journal since 1982. So I started really, really young with this thought in mind. I was a voracious reader as a kid, and was highly influenced by many of the authors I read. Those include Madeline L’Engle when I was very young to Harlan Ellison and Philip K Dick when I was a tween. As I got older I moved to more non-fiction multi-disciplinary study of the hard and soft sciences, and cross cultural theology because I really wanted to understand the world. It all goes into what I write now which is in multiple genres.

If you could compare your book to any other existing works, which ones would it be and why?
I have four books and two of them I can’t compare to anything. That is one reason why the indie part of me is such a hard sell. I believe a reviewer wrote on my first book that I overestimated the intelligence of my audience. That was the only book where that happened, but it is still my masterpiece. Even my newest book though, I AM” Poetry in Motion is something different. I feel like I am always pushing the edge and can usually barely get the world to work with me enough to even publish the things! I AM is an extraordinarily beautiful book that is made up of mostly pictures, with words that are set to them in order to bring out the depth of each in a complementary way. It is also about female power- from and for ages 10 to 100. Getting that into an E book was almost impossible. In fact, I thought it was going to be impossible but at the last minute we found a way to work it.

It is the same with my new book for Lycaon press. We wanted links to images of the characters and scenes that I had in my manuscript as an extra in the book and are still working on doing that, but it is not easy. I have to give my editor and Lycaon Press and Breathless Press big props for trying to make it work.

Tell us about your latest work and what inspired you.
In my latest work which is book one of a seven part series for Lycaon Press, I really wanted to write for a broader audience in a more fun way, yet still bring in some of the things I’ve learned and (as usual) bring in so much of the imagination portion of my brain. Luckily it has all come together, and it is a really good book for New Adults in the Paranormal Category.

Thanks for taking the time for this interview. All the best!
Thank you so much for having me. As an author, you know how important it is to get your name and books out there as much as possible, so I appreciate it!
