New Authors: Give Them A Chance
Like many of you, I was once a reader who only read certain books by specific authors. It was not until I decided to become a writer myself that I came to realize that just because the author is not well known does not mean that he or she is not a great storyteller.
Many think that small press publishers are not as good as the big guys, but that’s just not true. No, you may not walk into the local Barnes & Noble and see my books right beside some of the bigger names, but it is only a matter of time. Our books are available at places like amazon.com and Fictionwise, which is a division of Barnes & Noble.
A writer has to start somewhere, right? In all honesty, a lot of us are happy and have had great success with our small publisher and never submit to the larger publishers again.
Of course, I have submitted to the big time pubs and like many before me, I was shot down be it because of word count or something else that they did not think was right for them. However, I have come to find that the personal attention that I receive from my small press pub is invaluable and possibly not available from another, bigger publisher. It is the family-like atmosphere that comes with being a member of a small publisher that helps us become happy, successful authors.
So, the next time you feel the need for a new book, instead of buying that one author that you have been reading for so long, help yourself to one that you haven’t as well. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
