Steady On Old Chap
I say “ Steady on old chap”
A picture’s worth a thousand words; they say
Though even pictures only say so much.
I have no doubt there is a better way.
We can communicate by touch.
Shaking hands we are accustomed to.
Most people find that quite acceptable
But introducing something new
can make us feel uncomfortable
To greet friends with a warm embrace.
Seems somehow alien to Englishmen.
Not quite the done thing; out of place
Though fashions do change now and then.
Perhaps in time, we’ll learn to be more free,
and hug our friends affectionately.
