Running Problems: Treatment and Prevention

Even though running is said to be extremely beneficial for our cardiovascular health, blood sugar levels, and maintaining our healthy weight, we can’t really say that it’s a risk-free activity.

There are many potential problems, conditions, and injuries related to this activity, which are most often caused due to runners’ inexperience or ignorance, but there are definitely some of them we can’t deliberately control. Just stay with us and keep on reading if you want to read more about both of these categories and learn how to successfully prevent and treat them. Enjoy!

Ankle sprains are the most common injuries among the runners…
No matter if you’re an experienced runner or a novice at this activity, we’re almost 100% sure that you’re already familiar with ankle sprains, which are probably the most common injuries among the runners.

Basically, this condition develops when the ankle rolls either inward or outward and stretches the ligament, which usually happens due to an unfortunate landing on the hard ground and causes severe pain. Stretching before and after the exercise, as well as doing special exercises that strengthen the muscles around the ankle are some of the best ways to prevent this condition, but if you still manage to injure your ankle, you should give yourself some time to rest in the first place.

Of course, the recovery period depends on the severity of your condition, but you should know that balance exercises that strengthen the muscle around the ankle are highly recommended later on.

… As well as breathing problems
Many runners find it hard to pull in enough oxygen in order to meet the demands of their body, which is another widespread problem among the people who love to run in their free time. Even though some would say that such breathing problems are most commonly associated with people who are out of shape, the truth is there are a lot of other potential issues that can be linked with it, one of which is a poorly executed nose job.

Apart from the obvious aesthetic issues, a bad rhinoplasty can cause a number of breathing problems that can lead to even more serious conditions. If that’s the case with you, too, you should definitely opt for a rhinoplasty revision which will fix all those problems and help you breathe properly once again. Besides that, there is also exercise-induced asthma which involves tightening of the airways. This condition usually includes coughing, wheezing, and chest pain with every breath, and it becomes increasingly more difficult as this condition progresses.

This is when the runner finds it very difficult to catch his breath and when fatigue develops. Exercise-induced asthma can be treated by taking particular medications that prevent the airways from contracting, help them relax, and allow you to breathe correctly.

Shin splints are quite common, too
Apart from ankle sprains and various breathing problems, there are also shin splints which are quite common among the runners, too. Speaking of its symptoms, we can say that aching, stabbing sensation in the shins is the most frequently experienced one, and you should know that this condition occurs mostly when the muscles and the tendons covering the shinbone become inflamed. To speed up the process of recovery, you can use ice packs on your lower legs after your running session, as this will successfully reduce the pain.

Preventing shin splints can be done in a lot of ways, and the first one is increasing your mileage gradually instead of too quickly. You should also give your best to run on softer surfaces whenever possible, as hard surfaces like concrete increase the impact on your muscles, bones, and joints and therefore cause potential problems.

As you can see, there are a lot of potential problems, injuries, and conditions runners are likely to face during their running sessions, but it’s also good to know that all of them can be successfully prevented or at least put under control. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to stay healthy and unharmed and enjoy your favorite activity without any troubles, which is exactly what matters most!
