Tell us about your background. Who you are, where you are from?

Well, where to begin? I come from New York enriched with African and Native American heritage. I was bullied as a child for my height but heralded for my androgynous free-thinking as a teen. Loved school but I was not very fond of the rights of passage that came with it.

Solitude was very big for me, it gave me time to think. It liberated me from peer pressure and the avoidance of silencing my honesty. Being the eldest of six taught me responsibility, empathy, and the importance of keeping my crazy thoughts to myself.

What themes does your book explore and what do you hope the readers will take away from the experience? Is there a particular feeling or experience that you hope to evoke in the reader?

My Beloved Tourniquet is about love, betrayal, deception, suffering, power, and lust. It’s my wish that my readers, no matter how brief a moment, feel. For them to reflect on their own lives and their hearts. I wish to challenge their ideals on love and embrace the imperfections that come with the reality of relationships.

What prompted you to be an author and did you have a specific inspiration in mind? Were you influenced by a certain person, artist, or genre?

I chose to pursue publishing my book because of my son, Cadence. I wanted him to be proud of me. The reason that motivated me for writing MBT was because of certain unfulfillment I was feeling at the time. My writing style when I was younger was heavily influenced by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.

I was obsessed with paranormal violence and horror then. I have great respect for Anne Rice and her style and Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I would say as far as my writing “voice”, I like to think I have more of the crystal cogency of the classics written in the height of the twenties. But above all else, I absolutely adore Poe. I feel very connected to his tortured soul and melancholy intelligence. There is much beauty to be found in the macabre.

If you could compare your book to any other existing works, which ones would it be and why?

That would be difficult to say because I tried to veer as far from the romantic status quo as possible. I will say this, part of the plot likens to the Little Mermaid, in that the villainess uses subterfuge to steal the heroine’s lover. When the lovers meet it has a similar air to the integral awkwardness portrayed in the 2008 film Pride & Prejudice. I know cinema doesn’t count but it aptly applies once you read!

Tell us about your latest work and what inspired you.

There are two, Beloved’s second book, Dreams of Poison, and Deadly Aconite. Aconite will be my first paranormal adult romance. It’s set back around the Viking era. I wanted to create an honest love affair between a witch and a werewolf. A romance with all the complexities of a human relationship, enhanced by the drama of an ancient feud. A Romeo and Juliet of the werewolves and witches but with a happy ending.

I was inspired by a dear friend’s love of lycanthropy and our mutual desire to see werewolf erotica written for people like us. People who love the gore and violence that comes with a lycanthrope, who wish to see witches portrayed in a genuine light, and prefer the truest elements of love and lust without the tongue in cheek or bubble gum flair. I have immersed myself in research on werewolf folklore, the Germanic age, lore about witches and werewolves, Nordic and Viking language, and of course the Teutonic Traditions of Wicca.
