‘A wonderful conclusion to a terrific series’
“An Unlikely Conclusion” is the third book in the Velvet Shoe Collection–I read all 3 in order and would encourage everyone to do the same, so you really get the feel of the series.
This book begins just after Ruth Squire and Peter Kirby finally manage to get married. They board the train to begin their honeymoon and less than a hour later they are involved in a horrific train accident. The intensity of this dramatic event is made even more tragic by Ruth’s momentary willful and stubborn actions just before it happened.
Patty Wiseman has done masterful job of penning this Historical series, bringing to life the feelings of real human beings caught in turbulent times; in the corruption of the mob during the Roaring Twenties. Even if you don’t usually read the Historical genre, I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The entire Velvet Shoe Collection is a worthwhile addition to any ones library!

AN UNLIKELY CONCLUSION
By Patty Wiseman
Ruth wrapped her arms around her body, trying to get warm, shivering more from fright than the cold. It was too dark to see who lay on the ground, almost too dark to see if anyone moved about. Fires would flare up, die down, sputter out. Voices rose and fell, people searching for loved ones. She was alone.
“He was running toward the front of the train. I have to keep going; he must be somewhere up there.”
She trudged ahead, yearning to find him, terrified she would. He could be dead, maimed, burned. Any doubt she had, any immature selfish reason she had to pick a fight with him was gone. There’s no life without him. It all looked so clear, now. Her heart ached to relive the moment she ran out of the berth. Why did she always run? Instead of facing the problem, she ran.
A voice jarred her thoughts.
Maybe it’s Peter. He could be hurt.
One foot in front of the other, ignoring the pain of brambles tearing at her skin, she inched forward. To the left was a gap between the railroad cars, a break where they had come apart.
He could be on the other side. I’ve got to get across.
Feeling her way in the darkness, she found the end of the front car, climbed over the rail, and over to the other side. She looked around, squinting, trying to will her eyes to see his blonde head and broad shoulders.
There were no voices over here, no sound. Hope faltered, afraid of what that might mean.
Her voice shook, but she must call his name. “Peter, are you there?”
She tried again, louder. “Peter! Please answer me? Where are you?”
A branch snapped in the distance, a sign of life. She moved toward it, unable to see through the dense trees, heart drumming in her chest.
It must be him. I have to get there.
Caution disappeared, and she lunged forward, one foot hitting something solid, but pliant. A body.
