Want to know some creative conversation topics?

These are good topics or questions to have in reserve if conversation starts to lag on a date or in any other situation.

You have heard the advice that you should talk about the other person, and not just yourself. “Ask questions that the other person will enjoy answering,” they say. But how do you do this? It actually turns out to be a lot harder than it sounds. How do you know what the other person will enjoy talking about?

conversation01 Creative Conversation TopicsFirst of all, don’t overlook the obvious topics. Talking about the weather is seen as hackneyed, but it can lead to a very interesting discussion if the person you’re discussing it with is interested in scientific subjects.

Asking the other person what type of books he or she likes to read is always a good topic and can lead to interesting discussions, especially if you find that the two of you share some interests.

Talking about television can lead you to learn a lot about the other person. Try asking about her favorite TV show. If the other person doesn’t watch a lot of television currently, you can ask her what was her favorite show of the past.

Also, try talking about the current situation. “Look at all those bicycle riders! Do you enjoy bicycling yourself?” “That salad looks delicious! What’s in it?”

Then there are the “quirky” or “thought-provoking” questions, such as “What is your favorite knock knock joke?” Be careful with these, as their use can sometimes seem contrived or desperate. Spring them out of the blue, and they will seem out of place. Also, some people hate hypothetical questions.

However, if you can work these types of questions naturally into the conversation, they will work much better. For example, the question about the knock knock joke could work if you were already talking about humor or growing up.

Here are a few more creative conversation topics to get you started:

  • Who is your favorite singer (or musician)?
  • What is your favorite memory growing up?
  • Do you like to read? What types of books do you enjoy?
  • If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be?

Have fun with these creative conversation topics!
