Orchid

I breathe deeply and let out

everything I’ve held in so long.
Out of control, searching
for comfort in another soul
who speaks similar but stronger.

I think I need this place
at dusk every day,
the river gently lapping
rocks on the shore,
until the yearning,
the obsession

passes for good.

Along the Mohawk
goldenrod, thistle, sunflower,
tiger lilly, queen Anne’s lace,
and black eyed susan

but the orchid is loveliest
exotic rain forest gem
it’s straight green stem
shoots forth a proud bloom
of fuchsia or white

I long to be an orchid again
rare and beautiful
but the petals have all
fallen off.

Wish for a new bloom.
I breathe out again.
