Pornography is everywhere in our culture. But when we think of pornography, the first thing to pop into our heads is a magazine such as Playboy, Penthouse, and Internet porn.

What we tend to ignore, as pornography are those items that appeal to women and seem to be a bit more innocent. But don’t judge a book by its cover. Pornography is defined as “Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal.” pornography. (n.d.). The American Heritage(R) Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition.

romance stories Womens PornographyWomen’s pornography is called by another name. Women’s pornography is called “Romance Novels”. The industry is good at drawing its readers in. First they sell young girls on these teen romance stories. The authorship is good. They draw girls in by glamorizing the first kiss, putting it off until the anticipation is almost unbearable. And then, release, the couple gets together, romance is made, the connection is made, and the kiss! The first kiss is never awkward or uncomfortable; it is all about perfection and creates the idea that all first kisses are that amazing.

Girl readers grow up and move onto romance novels where the first kiss leads them into giving in and surrendering fully to the passions of their bodies. Many of these stories are about premarital sex, making it seem acceptable. But the descriptions of these sex scenes can make one feel as if they are in the scene itself. The reader becomes the voyeur of sex played out between two expert lovers. Thus, one gets the sense of arousal just by reading a scene. Women begin to think that all sex is supposed to be played out this way and search for the perfect man that can fill those shoes.

Sex between a man and a woman never plays out the way it is portrayed in magazine pictures, Internet websites, or romance novels. Sometimes it is awkward, sometimes funny, or sometimes it hurts. These avenues of pornography set up false images of reality. Therefore, for those who participate in viewing or reading pornography, un-reached expectations often lead to dissatisfaction in one’s sex life causing unhappiness in marriage.

Make no mistake about it; romance novels are pornography for women.

Love this post, have tried over and over to explain to men that women respond better to words than images when it comes to erotica.
